The New Macgregor

The Electoral Commission Queensland (ECQ) has recently finalised the redistribution of Macgregor. It is now a very different ward compared to what it used to be - from both geographical as well as demographical standpoints.

Geographically, Macgregor has gained a significant amount of land area, covering suburbs of Macgregor, Robertson, Eight Mile Plain, Upper Mt Gravatt, and Wishart. The M1 Pacific Motorway literally bisects the Ward and will thus remain a vital means of transportation for many residents to and from Brisbane CBD.

Unfortunately, under the current LNP council, we have seen a number of worrying trends due to un-checked high density development. This includes reported offences at a rate of 6,701 per 100,000 persons, and roads in Macgregor Ward are listed in the 10 most dangerous in Brisbane. The residents of Macgregor Ward are demanding for a sustainable and accountable methods of development.

Demographically, after absorbing much of Wishart Ward, it now has 47000-strong residents estimated by the last census. Equally important and, more so than any other wards, it is now home to an incredibly diverse group of residents!

...more so than any other wards, it is now home to an incredibly diverse group of residents...

Firstly, the proportion of young working families has increased significantly. A portion of retirees in the old Macgregor Ward is now being replaced by working residents. Secondly, with a significant proportion of the population born overseas, the New Macgregor is now even more diverse than ever! An ideal Councilor candidate will be someone who has real life work experience(and not a career politician), great communication skills (proficient in multiple languages), and in-depth understanding of the new challenges facing Macgregor!
